L'Origami

Dressmaking, like origami, uses various folds to achieve geometric shapes from flat material.  A designer can visualize the garment in a piece of fabric before making the pattern, whereas an origami artist can see the three dimensional shape in a square sheet of paper before making the folds.  A vivid spatial imagination enables the artist to see the material’s potential before constructing a beautiful work of art that can be displayed—or worn—for all to admire.

While techniques like the "outside reverse" and "inside reverse" sound like diving maneuvers, they’re origami folds that add form to paper.  Clever designers use magic tricks of the trade, e.g., “slimming” darts, to create flattering silhouettes.  Both crafts use pleats to create deceptively simple effects that add depth to their artwork.  Moreover, both are very particular about the material they choose to work with.  For example, Zero + Maria Cornejo uses Gold-certified organic cotton denim to create twisted, tapered cuffs to add volume to the Takeo pants.

Ingenious designers like Tibi have a knack for making asymmetrical lines look harmonious and chic.  By using unconventional effects, Tibi transforms an everyday shift into exceptional piece of art by fabricating the sleeves into elegant sails to transport you through the hottest summer days.  Tibi’s avant-flair is prominently displayed on the twisted halter top, and on the jogger pants that have a cropped overlay that adds a gentle flutter to your stride.

The Zero + Maria Cornejo collection includes the Curve Lui dress that has such a beautiful drape you’ll be tempted to buy it in every color.  The Miu is gathered in the center to form a graceful fountain of satin that ripples down the middle.  And the black Loop dress—featuring an elongated scoop of fabric on one side—redefines the purpose of a hemline.  Like all good art, it’s the unexpected details that grab your attention.
