The Portal To A Summer For Love

What public amenities do you love about your city?  The Hike & Bike trails?  Your local library?  Maybe it’s a nearby park that benefits you most.  Access to a grassy area to walk your dog or play kickball with your kids enhances a neighborhood and well-being.  However, even though recreational space is very desirable in a city, the wherewithal to maintain it isn’t always available.

The Presidio San Francisco

Increasingly, the support of public parks is supplemented by private donors who believe in the careful management of natural resources for the benefit of all.  As part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Presidio is “managed through a unique partnership approach” between the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service.  The Presidio’s mission is to “preserve natural and historic resources, to deliver educational programs, and to offer outstanding visitor services.”

One of the most popular events at the Presidio in San Francisco is the Presidio Picnic sponsored by the Presidio Trust and Off the Grid Markets on Sunday afternoons from March 19 through October. 2  Volunteer efforts and generous contributions from the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy make it possible to host the community picnic at the Main Post free of charge.  This form of philanthropy seeks to demonstrate there’s greater good in social gatherings than social networking.

As you pass through the Arguello Gate into the beautiful parkland of the Presidio, the quickening of your heartbeat feels like a shout-out from your soul.  It’s like passing through a portal to San Francisco’s most scenic natural setting.  You know a great day is on the horizon when you arrive at the Main Parade Ground and are welcomed by sparkling bay views and a lawn filled with friendly folks, gourmet food trucks, and a DJ spinning upbeat music.  Indeed, the Presidio Picnic is the ultimate San Francisco gathering for families and friends to experience a celebration of good food and goodwill.

How do you inspire greater good in your community?  Consider hosting a picnic in the great outdoors.  This single act of kindness will ripple outward and benefit humankind.
